Nash served briefly in the Civil War before moving to Columbus, Ohio to start a career in law. He was admitted to the bar in 1867. He was twice elected Franklin County prosecutor in the 1870's.
Nash served as Ohio Attorney General under governor Charles Foster.
With the assistance and endorsement of George Cox Mark Hanna, Nash won the office of governor. During his tenure, he established a standardized auditing system for state offices and institutions. Governor Nash also made a number of significant contributions in the area of taxation.
