In 1969, Spielberg crafted a twenty-four minute short film entitled Amblin. It was highly acclaimed, winning awards at several film festivals. The ultimate result for Spielberg was a seven year contract with Universal Studios. Early on, he directed for television programs such as Columbo and Marcus Welby, M.D.. His first major film wasSugarland Express. It received great reviews but didn't do very well at the box office.
Spielberg's breakthrough film was Jaws (1974).
In 1982, he founded the Amblin production studio.
The Dreamworks SKG movie studio was founded in 1994 through a partnership between Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg, and David Geffen.
Spielberg won the 1993 Academy Award for best director, for the film Schindler's List. Saving Private Ryan captured five Oscars at the 1998 Academy Awards, including Best Director.
