FAST FACTS:
After high school graduation, Newman enlisted in the Navy for flight training. While enrolled at Ohio University, he was turned down due to color blindness. In 1943, he started a World War II tour of duty as a radioman on torpedo bombers in the Pacific. After his discharge three years later, he enrolled at Kenyon College. He played on the school's football team and was active in campus theater.
