As a young man, Gable worked briefly in an Akron tire plant. In 1924, He arrived in Hollywood to pursue an acting career. MGM signed him in 1930.

He won an Oscar for his work in It Happened One Night (1934). He later received nominations for his performances in Mutiny on the Bounty and Gone With the Wind.

Gable served in the Army Air Force during the Second World War.
